Google Chrome drops support for Windows 7, 8.1 in early 2023

Google announced today that the Google Chrome web browser will likely drop support for Windows 7 and 8.1 starting February 2023.

On Feb. 7, 2023 Google is planning to release Chrome version 110, which will signify the last version of the browser available to Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users. Any Chrome releases after that will require Windows 10 or later to work, and Google makes it clear that, "older versions of Chrome will continue to work, but there will be no further updates released for users on these operating systems."

The date is consistent with Google's commitment, following 2020's pandemic lockdowns, to support Windows 7 so long as Microsoft was supporting that version under its Extended Security Update (ESU) program.

The effects of this seemingly disparaging news could prove costly, seeing consumers having to fork out to upgrade their Windows OS as they continue to battle the cost of living. According to Statcounter, 13.31% of all Windows users in September 2022 were still running version 7 or 8.1, compared with 13.61% who were using the latest Windows 11.
