Firefox 44 adds push notifications

Mozilla has updated its Firefox browser for Windows, Mac, Linux and Android. The most notable feature in this update is the addition of web-based push notifications to the desktop browser.

Users will be able to opt in to receive notifications from websites even when a site's tab has been closed or never opened.This feature is especially useful for "websites like email, weather, social networks and shopping, which users check frequently for updates.

Push notifications are now possible because they're an extension of the Service Worker technology that became a part of HTML last year. Any website is able to take advantage of the push API, though it's not widely supported yet.

Current Firefox users will automatically receive the upgrade.
