FCC Launches Net Neutrality Contest2011-01-07 09:53 by DanielaTags: FCC, Net Neutrality
Weeks after the Federal Communications Commission passed a controversial set of rules governing net neutrality, the regulatory body has launched a contest encouraging software developers and researchers to help enforce them. The Open Internet Challenge is asking for submissions from two groups: developers, who can create apps that measure Internet openness, and researchers, who may want to submit academic papers analyzing ways to measure and police Internet openness. "This challenge is about using the open Internet to protect the open Internet," said FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski in a statement. "Our goal is to foster user-developed applications that shine light on any practice that might be inconsistent with the free and open Internet. Empowering consumers with information about their own connections will promote a vibrant, innovative, world-leading broadband ecosystem." For instance, app submissions should be able to monitor real-time data on whether or not a consumer's ISP is interfering with DNS responses, application packet headers, or content. Research papers may want to cover broad Internet-usage patterns or techniques to detect Internet openness. Read more -here-
