During Facebook Connect — the replacement for the AR/VR event previously known as Oculus Connect — Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said today that the company is planning to release its first pair of augmented reality glasses in 2021.

The social media giant is partnering with EssilorLuxottica, which owns the Ray-Ban brand, to develop the smart glasses. The company had few details to share beyond that - the product name, specs, software capabilities, pricing and other information will be shared closer to the 2021 launch.

The smart glasses will put Facebook apps and other content inside a pair of Luxottica's Ray-Ban glasses, the companies say, and help people stay better connected to their friends and family.

"We're passionate about exploring devices that can give people better ways to connect with those closest to them. Wearables have the potential to do that. With EssilorLuxottica we have an equally ambitious partner who'll lend their expertise and world-class brand catalogue to the first truly fashionable smart glasses," Andrew Bosworth, Facebook's vice president of the Reality Labs division, said in a statement.

"I can't go into full product details yet, but they're gonna be the next step on the road to augmented reality glasses, and they look pretty good too," Zuckerberg said at Facebook Connect, the company's virtual reality and augmented reality conference.
