Facebook is apparently set to release its own video chat device, "Portal", next week. The hardware will work a little like the Echo Show, Amazon's video-enabled smart speaker.

Concerns over the diminishing public trust in Facebook led to the inclusion of a privacy shutter in front of Portal's wide-angle video camera. The device uses artificial intelligence (AI) to recognize and follow people using it for video calls.

The device will reportedly come in two versions. The larger of the two will set you back around $400, while the smaller one will cost approximately $300. You'll be able to control them using Alexa voice commands, and they'll have the capability to play music and videos, show cooking recipes and news briefs, among other things.

Facebook had planned to announce the device at its F8 developer conference in May, but reportedly delayed the announcement at the last minute due to the high-profile scandals of Cambridge Analytica and Russian election interference on the platform.
