Facebook to Develop App for Television Set-Top Boxes

Facebook is reportedly building its own TV app to work with set-top boxes like the Apple TV. The company is also in talks with media companies to license "TV-quality programming," which it might distribute via the app as a premium feature.

This is the social network's latest bid to gain a slice of the television advertising pie. A launch date is still unclear, but the video app is expected to arrive as the next step in Facebook's play for video, and soon TV viewers.

In April, Facebook expanded its live video product, Facebook Live - a potential threat to broadcast television, giving it prominent placement on its app and rolling out features to make it easier for users to search and comment in real time.

A Facebook spokesperson declined to comment.
