Facebook and the Federal Trade Commission are negotiating a multibillion-dollar fine to settle an investigation into the social network's privacy practices, The Washington Post reported Thursday.

The fine would be the largest the agency has ever imposed on a technology company, but the two sides have not yet agreed on an exact amount. If talks break down, the FTC could take the matter to court in what would likely be a bruising legal fight.

Facebook has had several high-profile privacy lapses in the past couple of years. The FTC has been looking into the Cambridge Analytica scandal since last March. The data mining firm accessed the data of some 87 million Facebook users without their consent.

The FTC could slap Facebook with fines of up to $40,000 per violation of the consent decree. If fined for every Facebook user, the number would total trillions of dollars and is considered outside the realm of possibility.
