Facebook quietly swaps email addresses on profiles

Facebook recently assigned @facebook.com email addresses to all users - even without opting in to the feature. And the company reportedly changed the settings across all profiles to reflect the new email address.

Now everyone's personal email addresses have been hidden from their profiles, regardless of previously selected privacy settings. Instead, your @facebook.com contact info is the only one visible to people with permission to see your email addresses. This makes it harder for friends to contact you via third-party email unless you reset your controls.

Emails sent to @facebook.com addresses appear alongside posts sent via the network's internal message system, allowing users to pick up both types of communication from the same place.

"We are providing every Facebook user with his or her own Facebook email address because we find that many users find it useful to connect with each other, but using Facebook email is completely up to you," said a statement from the company.

Users who want to stop the @facebook.com address from showing up on their profiles can do so by editing their "Contact Info" sections.
