Facebook phone rumours are on the line

Facebook is reportedly hoping to release its own smartphone by next year. The New York Times has spoken to sources close to the firm and says that some engineers have been hired, including around half a dozen people from Apple.

This would be the company's third attempt at bringing a living, breathing smartphone into its core business: Initial rumors in 2010 put smartphones on Facebook's map, but the company allegedly veered away from mobile development after realizing just how difficult it is to build mobile hardware.

The social networking company did not comment on this recent report, but it does admit to having a mobile strategy.

"Our mobile strategy is simple: we think every mobile device is better if it is deeply social," said a spokesperson.

"We're working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers, and application developers to bring powerful social experiences to more people around the world."
