Facebook suffered a worldwide outage on Thursday morning that stopped users across the globe from accessing the social network. The outage happened before 4 a.m. EST, and lasted for about half an hour. Users who tried to log in to their accounts were getting a message on their screens reading: "Sorry, something went wrong. We are working on getting this fixed as soon as we can."

The company, which has about 1.2 billion users, said it had experienced a technical issue that prevented some users from posting on its site, though it did not provide any detail on what had caused the problem.

"Earlier this morning, we experienced an issue that prevented people from posting to Facebook for a brief period of time. We resolved the issue quickly, and we are now back to 100%," Facebook said in a statement on Thursday. "We're sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused."

Major outages, while not frequent, have happened several times over the last few years. In 2010, the company went to great lengths to explain an outage that lasted for 2 1/2 hours. On its engineering blog, the company wrote a nearly 400-word explanation and apology, saying that the severity of the outage was because of an "unfortunate handling of an error condition."
