European Commission bans TikTok on staff devices

The European Commission, the executive arm of the EU, banned its employees from using TikTok on their smartphones amid concerns from Western governments about the risks the platform may pose to national security.

Staff members were told to remove the social media app from their work devices as well as their personal devices used for work, The Associated Press reported.

"The measure aims to protect the Commission against cybersecurity threats and actions which may be exploited for cyberattacks against the corporate environment of the commission," EU spokeswoman Sonya Gospodinova said.

The commission says it has around 32,000 permanent and contract employees. They must remove the app as soon as possible and no later than 15 March.

TikTok, owned by Chinese company ByteDance, has faced allegations that it harvests users' data and hands it to the Chinese government. TikTok insists it operates no differently from other social media.
