Elon Musk offered to make ventilators as hospitals facing shortages due to the coronavirus outbreak, after a Twitter follower asked that he repurpose his factory to do so.

As for how Musk might approach making ventilators, the entrepreneur said they are "not difficult" to make. He pointed to how Tesla makes "cars with sophisticated hvac systems," and SpaceX "makes spacecraft with life support systems," though he admitted it would take some time to spin up any real production effort.

The company will suspend production at its California vehicle factory beginning on March 24 to comply with local orders aimed at curbing the spread of coronavirus, the company said on Thursday. The company said its New York factory will also temporarily suspend production, while operations at its Nevada plant will continue.

"Despite taking all known health precautions, continued operations in certain locations has caused challenges for our employees, their families and our suppliers," the company said in a statement.

Tesla's Fremont plant is its flagship factory. The company only recently opened its second car plant in Shanghai and had to suspend operations there amid the emergence of COVID-19 in China.
