Online retailer eBay says it will urge users to change their passwords following a "cyberattack" impacting a database with encrypted passwords and non-financial data.

The database was compromised between late February and early March and was not detected until two weeks ago. The hackers gained access to information including eBay customers' names, their encrypted passwords, email, registered addresses, phone numbers and date of birth. The hacked database, however, did not contain financial information or other confidential personal information. eBay also emphasized on Wednesday it keeps PayPal data separate from its online marketplace.

eBay is taking the breach extremely seriously stating that users employing the same password across eBay and other sites should also change those passwords. It stresses your eBay password should be unique.

"Information security and customer data protection are of paramount importance to eBay Inc., and eBay regrets any inconvenience or concern that this password reset may cause our customers," the company said in a statement released this morning. "We know our customers trust us with their information, and we take seriously our commitment to maintaining a safe, secure and trusted global marketplace."
