DefenseCode researchers have uncovered a remote root access vulnerability in the default installation of Linksys routers. The team alerted Cisco to the Linksys vulnerability after finding it during a product security evaluation. It took the team only 12 days to develop an exploit that could be used by hackers to take control of a person's wireless router and hijack all the information being processed through it.

So far, there's no mention of hackers using the exploit out in the wild just yet. Cisco is also working on a fix that should be available within the next 10 days. After that, DefenseCode will release the details of the exploit to the public for further study.

"Linksys takes the security of our products and customers' home networks very seriously. Although we can confirm contact with DefenseCode, we have no new vulnerability information to share with customers – for our WRT54GL or other home routers. We will continue to review new information that comes to light and will provide customer updates as appropriate."

Reportedly, the hack works with the latest default firmware, however, third party firmware like dd-wrt may be immune to the attack.
