After a week of speculations, it's now official: Comcast Corp. plans to start customer trials of a wireless service using Verizon Communications Inc.'s network. The service will be the result of its MVNO agreement with Verizon.

"We're going to trial some things and test some things after we activate and we'll update people as that progresses," Comcast chairman and CEO Brian Roberts said. "But it's an opportunity to take the network and the successful investments we've made and try to see if we can continue relationships and product innovation that the team is working on."

The nation's largest cable provider could use Verizon's network and its own collection of Wi-Fi hotspots to create a potentially lower cost alternative to the four national wireless carriers.

Details, such as when the trials will begin, how widespread they will be, or what types of service Comcast would offer haven't been revealed yet.
