Comcast announced Wednesday that it plans to invest $1 billion over the next decade to connect more low-income Americans to broadband internet. Comcast's $1 billion commitment will include investments in a number of critical areas, including additional support for its ongoing Lift Zone initiative, which will establish Wi-Fi-connected safe spaces in more than 1,000 community centers nationwide for students and adults by the end of 2021; new laptop and computer donations; grants for nonprofit community organizations to create opportunities for low-income Americans, particularly in media, technology, and entrepreneurship; and continued investment in the company's landmark Internet Essentials program. Internet Essentials offers $9.95 per month broadband service and a free modem to families receiving public assistance. A comparable retail package, Comcast's Xfinity Prepaid Internet service, delivers the same 50 Mbps speeds at $45 per month, with a one-time $35 fee for the modem. Comcast said that, working with nonprofit partners, it has connected 10 million people in America to the internet over the past decade.
