Comcast Internet customers surpass Cable subscribers

Comcast has released its quarterly earnings report from which it becomes clear that the largest cable provider in the U.S. has now more Internet subscribers than cable subscribers. The fact has been announced by Comcast executive Neil Smit during an earnings call.

This makes Comcast the country's largest broadband provider, with more than 22 million high-speed Internet customers.In the end of March, the company had about 22.4 million customers for each of its businesses - broadband and cable. The pay-TV customer base was only 6,000 subscribers larger than the number of broadband subscribers. It is expected that the number of Internet customers will finally pass cable during the next quarter.

The most obvious reason for the figures is the advent of streaming TV that is reshaping the cable industry. It is slowly dripping video subscribers while Netflix adds more, and several online TV alternatives have launched in recent months.
