Comcast, Charter to strike wireless partnership

Comcast and Charter Communications are expected to start a wireless partnership intended to help both companies find out the best methods for entry into the market, by sharing information and technology.

Both Comcast and Charter have already announced plans to offer their own wireless services. They will only offer wireless service within their respective cable footprints – not nationwide.

Comcast confirmed in April it would launch an MVNO, Xfinity Mobile, in mid-2017 using a combination of its 16 million Wi-Fi hotspots and Verizon's mobile network.

Charter, meanwhile, said it planned to enter the mobile segment in 2018, with both companies now set to do battle with the country's four established operators.

The agreement could also be a prelude to a joint purchase of a carrier such as Sprint or T-Mobile. Under the terms of the agreement, neither Comcast nor Charter could try to acquire a carrier without the other's consent, but both firms could work together to make their way into what is already a crowded and competitive market.
