Clearwire to pull Huawei from network

Clearwire stated again last week that it is reducing the amount of Huawei equipment it is using in its TD-LTE network buildout as compared with its existing WiMAX network, in a response to ongoing concerns that Huawei's equipment is a threat to U.S. national security.

"Huawei represents less than 5 percent of our total LTE spend, and we are materially reducing their footprint in our LTE network," John Saw, CTO of Clearwire, said. "We are committed to ensuring that our network and our customers' data are secure. We have great respect for the U.S. government and their oversight role over the nation's infrastructure. We continue to be transparent with the government and have thoroughly reviewed our plans with the technical arms of multiple federal agencies."

Concerns over Huawei's equipment date since last year when a report from the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence recommended the U.S. block acquisitions and mergers involving Chinese vendors Huawei and ZTE. The report also recommended that the U.S. government and U.S. companies avoid using equipment from the two Chinese companies.
