China says US-based hackers are targeting its government websites

After the U.S. blamed China for several cyber attacks targeted against the states, China hit back by claiming Chinese military websites were attacked an average 144,000 times a month in 2012 by foreign hackers, with 62.9 percent from the United States, a military spokesman said Thursday.

In a statement on the Defense Ministry website, spokesman Geng Yansheng said that the two websites have been under attack for years, with the number steadily increasing. Geng also said he's concerned about US plans to increase its cyberwarfare capabilities.

"Like other countries, China faces a serious threat from hacking and is one of the primary victims of hacking in the world," Geng said. "Numbers of attacks have been on the rise in recent years."

"We note that the US media recently reported that the United States will adopt the policy of 'pre-emptive' cyber attacks, large-scale expansion of network warfare units, and the development of network rules of engagement," he says. "The above practices are not conducive to the joint efforts of the international community to enhance network security. We hope that the United States will explain and clarify."
