AT&T withdraws FCC application for T-Mobile acquisition

AT&T and T-Mobile have abandoned attempts to seek approval for a merger from the Federal Communications Commission. The companies have withdrawn their application to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and will focus on handling the flak they face over the merger from the Department of Justice first.

"This formal step today is being undertaken by both companies to consolidate their strength and to focus their continuing efforts on obtaining antitrust clearance for the transaction from the Department of Justice," Deutsche Telekom, parent to T-Mobile USA, said in a canned statement.

In a statement, AT&T says it hopes to gain merger approval in other ways. It says it plans to continue with efforts to win antitrust clearance for the transaction from the Department of Justice either through the litigation pending with the US District Court for the District of Columbia, or by 'alternate means'.
