AT&T Inc. has announced that it would enter the home security and automation business by selling home automation and security services nationwide. The new service is called Digital Life, and will be an IP-based platform that allows users to monitor and detect activity throughout their house remotely, and "take action" on devices like PCs, tablets, and smartphones.

AT&T's technology comes from Xanboo, a company it bought in late 2010. Its central control panel can connect wirelessly with cameras, thermostats, appliance controls, lights and sensors for doors, windows, smoke and carbon monoxide. Through the panel, home owners can then control their home from their cellphones.

"AT&T digital life will change the way people live, work and play - and meets a clear need in the market," said Kevin Petersen, senior vice president of AT&T's digital life business.

Users will be able to "try before they buy" at an AT&T store or through other unspecified AT&T distribution channels, regardless of their current wireless provider, they will be able to get in on the service. The first round of trials will begin this summer in Dallas and Atlanta.
