AT&T will buy Time Warner for about $85.4 billion. We may expect that the Dallas telephone giant probably won't take control of Time Warner until sometime in 2018.

Before the acquisition comes true, it must be approved by regulators. US lawmakers have already raised questions about the deal. The U.S. Justice Department, has the power to reject such a deal if it violates antitrust laws. AT&T said it is unclear if the Federal Communications Commission will have jurisdiction to review the deal.

However AT&T's chief executive Randall Stephenson believes regulators will approve the deal.

"Premium content always wins," Stephenson said. "It has been true on the big screen, the TV screen and now it's proving true on the mobile screen."

AT&T already is one of the world's largest communications companies, with more than $147 billion in revenue in 2015.
