AT&T Starts Selling Satellite Smartphone

AT&T has started selling the TerreStar Genus, its first satellite smartphone, for complete coverage in the U.S., even hundreds of miles offshore.

The Dallas, Texas-based carrier said the new phone is ideal for people outside of regular coverage, such as boaters, forest rangers and emergency personnel.

AT&T said the Genus uses its cellular network when it's available, but can also connect to a satellite - to not just send and receive voice, but also data - when network coverage isn't available.

But there's a few drawbacks. Terrestrial service costs a whopping $5 per megabyte, or 400 times more expensive than traditional $25 a month satellite data plans. And the phone requires a clear view of the southern sky, where the satellite sits, with no buildings, trees or hills blocking the way.
