AT&T hikes phone upgrade threshold to 24 months

AT&T announced in a blog post it is raising the threshold for subsidized handset replacements from 20 months to two years. The restriction applies to new and existing customers whose contracts end in March 2014 or later.

"This aligns device upgrade eligibility with our standard two-year wireless agreement and it applies to any customer whose agreement expires in March 2014 or later," AT&T said in the blog post announcing the move.

AT&T will still offer early upgrades after you've completed six months or more of your service commitment at a partial discount. And subscribers can always pay full retail price to get an upgrade any time during their service contract.

A limited-time trade-in offer is still in effect, offering $100 off the purchase of a new smartphone when customers hand in their current handset (provided the device is less than three years old and in good working condition).

Two months ago, Verizon Wireless increased its subsidized phone upgrade eligibility time from 20 months to 24 months as well.
