AT&T this week announced the expansion of its 4G LTE network in Birmingham, Ala.; Memphis, Tenn.; Portland, Ore.; and Sacramento, Calif. In addition, the carrier last week enhanced service in Philadelphia as well as Rochester, N.Y. and Wilmington, Del.

AT&T has the second most robust LTE infrastructure in the country, behind Verizon. However, it is in no position to dethrone Verizon any time soon.

With the recent expansion, AT&T's LTE network now covers 72 markets, the carrier said. AT&T is planning to reach a total of 100 cities by the end of the year, and largely complete its LTE rollout by the end of 2013.

"As the customers move to LTE, they consume more data," said AT&T Chief Executive Randall Stephenson on Wednesday, spelling out for investors carriers' hopes. "We are feeling really good about this and how it is playing out so far."
