AT&T has launched a free service which will allow its cellular subscribers to fight spam calls and other types of unwanted telemarketing.

Named Call Protect, the free smartphone application is available to those AT&T customers who have HD Voice Service. The service is not available for customers with AT&T work phones if their employer is an AT&T corporate customer.

An automatic fraud blocking feature will stop scams at the network level, while users will also get warnings about suspected spam calls if they're in an HD Voice coverage area.

"We've listened to our customers and know they want a network that provides tools to proactively assist in blocking nuisance calls," the company said. "AT&T Call Protect, along with others, will help put customers more in control of the calls they receive."

The app lets customers use the service for up to 30 days at a time. After that, they will have to renew the plan and designate numbers that they want to block.
