Anonymous Members Infected by Trojan DDOS Utility

Hackers have duped supporters of the Anonymous group into installing the Zeus botnet, which steals confidential information from PCs, including banking usernames and passwords, security researchers said last week. Symantec said it had traced related attacks back to January 20, 2012, which is the day that the FBI took down Megaupload.

"In these DDoS attacks, supporters using the Low Orbit Ion Cannon denial-of-service (DoS) tool would voluntarily include their computer in a botnet for attacks in support of Anonymous," Symantec writes.

"In the wake Anonymous member arrests this week, it is worth highlighting how Anonymous supporters have been deceived into installing Zeus botnet clients purportedly for the purpose of DoS attacks. The Zeus client does perform DoS attacks, but it doesn't stop there. It also steals the users' online banking credentials, webmail credentials, and cookies."

Anonymous has reacted to Symantec's report. A member with Twitter account YourAnonNews wrote:

"This post from @Symantec about @YourAnonNews's spreading the DDOS hijacking trojan is wrong & libelous to say the least. Dear @Symantec - @YourAnonNews NEVER posted the DDOS hijacker nor did we attempt to trick people; instead we WARNED of it. Also, @Symantec - maybe if you paid attention to more details and did proper due diligence, your source code wouldn’t have been stolen. SMH"
