Ad-supported Disney+ tier is here for $7.99 per month

As of Thursday, Disney's ad-free tier costs $10.99 per month - an increase of $3. But for those that want to save a few dollars, Disney+ has a new tier with ads that costs $7.99 per month. The introduction of the new tier, called Disney+ Basic, comes about a month after Netflix launched its ad-supported tier for $6.99 per month."

Today's launch marks a milestone moment for Disney+ and puts consumer choice at the forefront. With these new ad-supported offerings, we're able to deliver greater flexibility for consumers to enjoy the full breadth and depth of incredible storytelling from The Walt Disney Company," Michael Paull, president of Direct to Consumer, said in a statement.

How it works: At launch, Disney+ will feature traditional 15 and 30-second pre-roll and mid-roll ads that brands can buy on a run-of-network basis, meaning they can buy a share of the ads that run on rotation across different programming on Disney+. Disney has also partnered with more than 100 advertisers to support the ad-based streaming option.

Initially, the plan is only available in the U.S., but the company will likely begin exploring ad-supported plans internationally next fiscal year, said Rita Ferro, Disney's president of advertising sales and partnerships.
