Can the SSID be encrypted?

Even if you enable WEP, the SSID is not encrypted. WEP (the encryption standard for 802.11) only encrypts the data packets and not 802.11 management packets. The SSID is in the beacon and probe management messages, and therefore not encrypted even if WEP is enabled.

SSID goes over the air in clear text, which makes obtaining it easy by sniffing 802.11 wireless traffic.
