11. What online activities don't perform well with a satellite connection ?

Although satellite provides much higher throughput than dialup, because of the higher latency (500-1000ms) associated with the distance data must travel, certain time-sensitive online applications might not work well. Even if they do work, they may perform same as, or worse than a regular dialup Internet connection.

Some examples of such programs are Voice / Video over IP (NetMeeting, NetPhone, etc.), VPN applications, online real-time games, such as Quake, CounterStrike, EverQuest, Diablo, etc.

On http://www.infodish.com, HughesNet advises VPN on satellite Internet can reduce the speed as much as 50% to 75%. The better way to restore it is to disabling your VPN client when your internet session is over.

Other application that not good using satellite are online day trading.

However, if you use satellite service for other activities such as download digital images, video clip, MP3 music, and software upgrade, the speed are 40 seconds or less depend on the applications and service plan that you sign up. Checkout the animated speed test from this link http://www.infodish.com/About-HughesNet-Satellite-Internet/HughesNet-Speed.aspx.
