Amazon has been examining the idea of opening discount stores or outlets selling unsold electronics and home goods at steep discounts, Bloomberg has reported. The products would reportedly be sourced from inventory in its warehouses, and the company has weighed opening permanent locations and pop-up stores in malls and parking lots. The stock would consist of smaller items that don't take up a lot of space, like home goods, toys, kitchen items and electronics, but not clothing. "It's a way to be able to clean out warehouses, and get through inventory without having to destroy it," said one of the unnamed people sourced for the report. "It is keeping with the value proposition of Amazon, keeping price at the forefront and allowing customers to get access to products at low cost." Amazon already sells discounted inventory online through a program called Amazon Outlet. Returned and used items are sold through a separate page called Amazon Warehouse. As the company has grown, its vendor managers have been encouraged to bargain with suppliers to earn the right to return to them Amazon's unsold inventory, current and former employees say. The discount store would not be Amazon's first foray into brick-and-mortar retail locations, as the company already has nearly 100 stores customers can visit, including Amazon Go, a convenience store, and 4-Star, a retail site that focuses on Amazon's best-selling items.
