Walmart Offers New Streaming Video Purchases

The world's largest retailer on Tuesday started streaming many movies the same day they come out on DVD. This is the second attempt of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. to get a share of Netflix Inc.'s business and comes two weeks after Netflix announced price increases.

The new service is offered in conjunction with Vudu, the video streaming service that Wal-Mart bought 18 months ago. The Vudu store offers 24 hour rentals from 99 cents and purchases from $4.99 that can then be played directly from the website.

"One of our key priorities is to provide one seamless shopping experience for our customers and to help them shop the way they live their lives today. This means we're bringing together everything we are from our stores, our brand, and our footprint with the power of eCommerce, mobile technologies, etc.," a Walmart spokesperson said. "With VUDU now integrated into Walmart.com, we're providing customers more access to enjoy digital entertainment in a variety of ways — on their terms."
