Verizon fired back at Netflix on Thursday after it was revealed that Netflix showed its customers an error message blaming Verizon's network for slowing the streaming of Netflix's programming. Verizon has disagreed that it's at fault for dips in performance, and it reiterates that in the cease-and-desist letter sent to Netflix's top lawyer, David Hyman.

"There is no basis to assert that issues with respect to playback of any particular video session are attributable solely to the Verizon network," wrote Verizon general counsel Randal Milch to Netflix's chief lawyer. "Verizon demands that Netflix immediately cease and desist from providing any such further 'notices' to users of the Verizon network."

Netflix said on Thursday the messages are meant to provide customers more information about their service, similar to its publication of a speed index that ranks Internet service providers.

Verizon and Netflix did manage to sign a commercial arrangement, which the company says it agreed to only in order to improve the streaming service for its customers on the Verizon Fios network.
