Verizon Wireless intends to offer Voice over LTE (VoLTE) by the end of next year. Nicola Palmer, vice president of network operations, said during a press briefing today that the carrier would aim to conduct field trials in late 2013 with the goal of launching commercial service soon after.

VoLTE will enable Verizon to route calls over its LTE network, which is a more efficient and faster process that enables higher call quality. Palmer also said that consumer trials will begin in late 2013, with commercial service likely to follow in 2014.

"We have ongoing VoLTE technical trials and are excited by the rich communications services that it will bring to consumers when it is ready to go to market," said Verizon spokesman Tom Pica.

"Our 1X network is very efficient and provides excellent voice service to our customers today. We'll ease into VoLTE, first enabling VoLTE with a rich communication service in addition to standard CDMA voice and let customers get comfortable with it. After that, we'll be ready to offer the service to customers who choose it as the only voice solution on their device," he added.
