Verizon Launches Wireless Broadband for Rural, Remote Homes

Verizon Wireless announced yesterday "HomeFusion Broadband," a home broadband service that delivers 4G speeds to the residents of rural areas at the price of $59.99 for 10GB. The new service is intended for remote homes that can't get DSL or cable service.

The telco will launch HomeFusion later this month in Dallas, Texas, where Comcast, Charter Communications, Time Warner Cable, Grande Communications and AT&T serve parts of the market. It will also sell Home Fusion in Birmingham, Ala., where Charter and AT&T market high-speed Internet access, and Nashville, Tenn., where it could compete with Comcast and AT&T.

HomeFusion could provide potent competition for satellite broadband providers, which are often "providers of last resort" for rural homes. The service requires the installation of a cylindrical antenna, about the size of a 5-gallon bucket, on an outside wall. The hardware costs $200, but the installation is free.

"HomeFusion will eventually be available across our 4G LTE footprint, which is expected to match our 3G footprint in 2013," said Verizon spokeswoman Debra Lewis. "It's another option for customers who have either limited broadband options or want to use 4G LTE for broadband to the home," she added.
