Wireless carrier Verizon may be planning to introduce a service that would let customers stream television shows and movies over the Web. The service could be introduced as early as next year, according to the report, and would offer a limited lineup of movies and television shows. The new service would reportedly be rolled out in 2012.

"These discussions could be tricky since TV networks/content producers don't like to upset their lucrative carriage deals with cable multi-system operators (MSO) but this could be another compelling over-the-top option. The article notes a Verizon offering could be more limited in scope versus a more traditional cable package," said Youssef Squali, an analyst at Jefferies.

Verizon already offers a limited amount of Internet-based streaming content through FiOS TV Online for subscribers of its FiOS cable TV service. FiOS TV Online includes streaming content from HBO Go, Epix, Nickelodeon, ESPN, TNT, TBS, CNN Headline News and Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. Verizon will also offer a FiOS TV app on Microsoft's Xbox LIVE marketplace for existing Verizon subscribers this month. In April, Verizon also announced a new platform to deliver premium video content to smartphones, tablets and Internet-connected TVs.
