US falling behind on Internet access

The U.S. is falling behind when it comes to the availability and quality of access to the Internet, The New York Times reports. According to the report, it takes roughly 35 minutes to download a two-hour high- definition movie in the central Texas city. That might not sound bad now, but it takes only 13 minutes in Riga, the capital of Latvia. While ISPs and other cable providers claim that current speeds are good enough, the Obama administration says that "fast, affordable and reliable broadband service" is needed to "create jobs and grow wages at home." Unfortunately, the administration and ISPs continue to classify "broadband" as anything above 10Mbps - speeds which are easily and affordably achieved in most metro areas. The high price and relatively low speed of US Internet service "seems completely out of whack with what we see in the rest of the world," former Obama administration tech adviser Susan Crawford told the Times.
