Smart-gadget makers have announced at CES they are creating the Internet of Things Consortium to promote their emerging industry and discuss best practices. Founding members include Active Mind Technologies, BASIS Science, Coin, Kease, Logitech, MOVL, Ouya, Poly-Control, SmartThings and Ube.

The so-called Internet of Things Consortium is a non-profit organization which says its mission is to spur "cooperation between hardware, software, and service providers, the ostensible goal being to pave the way for more intelligent home appliances, like talking refrigerators or smart ovens.

"The IoT Consortium is primarily focused on those Internet enabled devices and related software services that directly touch consumers in the form of home automation, entertainment, and productivity," says the group's newly- launched website.

The consortium will hold its first meeting on Wednesday at 5 pm, at CES in Vegas.
