Sprint rolls out Wi-Fi calling to iPhone customers

Sprint has announced that it will expand its Wi-Fi calling service to the iPhone models that it offers. Among them are the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s. This feature will allow users to make phone calls via Wi-Fi networks even where the cellular coverage is too weak to sustain a call.

"Wi-Fi calling is like a major expansion of our network, allowing Sprint customers to get coverage anywhere they have Wi-Fi connectivity," David Owens, senior vice president of product development for Sprint, said in the announcement. "Traditional wireless technology has some limitations in places like basements and high-rise office buildings. Wi-Fi expands our customers' connectivity in a big way."

The new feature could be really useful as Wi-Fi is almost everywhere nowadays - in coffee shops, airports, restaurants, schools. We also have to mention that using the connections would cost customers none of their wireless minutes or count against their data limits.

Another advantage of the service is the fact that Wi-Fi calling is less expensive that cellular calling, and it can be used as backup where no cellular signal is available. The carriers also see Wi-Fi networks as a way to preserve bandwidth on cellular networks.
