Netflix will begin charging 'extra user' fees early next year

Netflix announced on Tuesday it officially will begin charging for account sharing early next year, after hinting at a crackdown in recent months. In a letter to shareholders, Netflix said the company intends to launch "extra member" sub-accounts in 2023, which will require users to pay an additional fee for friends and family members accessing their account.

"We've landed on a thoughtful approach to monetize account sharing and we'll begin rolling this out more broadly starting in early 2023. After listening to consumer feedback, we are going to offer the ability for borrowers to transfer their Netflix profile into their own account, and for sharers to manage their devices more easily and to create subaccounts ("extra member"), if they want to pay for family or friends."

Netflix did warn this was coming. In April, as the company was losing subscribers and its stock plummeted, executives revealed that, by their own estimate, around 30 million households in the US and Canada were accessing Netflix through shared passwords. Now, after testing a handful of approaches to curb account sharing, they've announced new features that they hope will encourage people to start paying up.

With growing competition in streaming services, Netflix can't afford to ignore the issue. It's focusing on adding subscribers and making more money from the subscribers it already has.
