Netflix is now detailing how it aims to maintain password sharing within a household while cracking down on outside usage. The company aims to curtail account sharing this year by asking people to pay extra money to use the streaming service outside the household for extended periods of time. As a result, Netflix will require users to identify a "primary location" for all accounts that live within the same household. Users will need to sign into the home wifi of the primary location at least once every 31 days to ensure their device is not blocked. If you live in the same home as the paid Netflix account holder, you'll still be able to share access - even when at work or traveling. TVs, phones, and laptops that regularly stream from the account holder's "primary location" will be designated as "trusted devices." The company said it will use information such as IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity to determine whether a device signed into the account is connected to the primary location. The enforced rule against password sharing has been in the works since 2022, as the service nearly a million subscribers between last April and July when more users unsubscribed. The rules currently apply to Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru, where Netflix has been testing the new policy. The company plans on rolling it out to the rest of the globe later this quarter.
