Netflix announced today that it will start publishing monthly rankings of U.S. ISPs based on their performance across all Netflix streams.

The streaming video provider said its large user base and constant streaming output gives it insight into the relative speeds of providers. Promoting faster download speeds is in the company's interest, as it will make viewers happier at little cost to Netflix.

"Our 30 million members view over 1 billion hours of Netflix per month, so we have very reliable data for consumers to compare ISPs in terms of real world performance," Netflix's vice president of content delivery, Ken Florance, said in a blog post.

According to Netflix, Google Fiber is the most consistently fast Internet service provider (ISP) in the United States for November. Based on "actual" user speeds, Google Fiber – which is currently only available to residents of Kansas City (Missouri and Kansas) – streamed Netflix videos at an average rate of 2.55 megabits per second. The second closest was Verizon FiOS, at 2.19 Mbps, followed by Comcast and Charter, both of which clocked in at 2.17 Mbps. At the bottom of the table come T-Mobile with 0.64Mbps, Sprint with 0.56Mbps and AT&T Mobile with a paltry 0.48Mbps.
