Netflix in talks for cable partnership

Sources have told Reuters that Netflix has already been meeting with some of the country's leading cable companies. At least one cable provider may begin offering Netflix as a premium add-on later this year.

Hastings noted at an investor event last week that a joint deal with cable companies was a natural transition for the company. That may seem like a strange thing for a decidedly anti-cable company like Netflix to say, but with HBO and Amazon breathing down his company's neck, Hastings is looking to create a bit of distance. And that's where the cable providers come in.

"It's not in the short term, but it's in the natural direction for us in the long term," said Hastings. "Many (cable service providers) would like to have a competitor to HBO, and they would bid us off of HBO."

While Netflix offers mainly old TV shows and movies through its Web streaming service, it had been seen as a threat by some cable operators and cable networks worried the $7.99 a month service would lead to customers dropping the much more expensive cable TV package, a fear that has become known in the industry as "cord cutting."
