Netflix begins streaming in Cuba

Following its plan to offer video streaming service in 200 markets before the end of 2016, Netflix has launched its service in Cuba. This happens weeks after U.S. and Cuban officials announced that they would begin to restore diplomatic ties.

"We are delighted to finally be able to offer Netflix to the people of Cuba, connecting them with stories they will love from all over the world," Netflix co-founder and CEO Reed Hastings said in a statement released by Netflix. "Cuba has great filmmakers and a robust arts culture and one day we hope to be able to bring their work to our global audience of over 57 million members."

Customers in Cuba would be able to watch a variety of shows including "House of Cards", "Orange is the New Black" and "Marco Polo".

Unfortunatelly, only few Cubans will have the chance to subscribe for the service. At the price of $7.99 per month, it will be unaffordable for the majority of the population, whose average month income is $20 to $25. Besides, only 27% of Cuba's 11 million population has access to the Internet. Local networks and Wi-Fi are also highly restricted.

Netflix is expected to launch its movie and TV streaming service in Japan in the fall of 2015.
