Netflix has announced a new data saving tool in their mobile app that will help users avoid unwanted charges. Originally promised back in march, the data-saving feature has finally started rolling out this week.

Android and iOS users will be able to adjust video quality to save data, switching between low, medium, high and unlimited mode. The default setting will let users stream about three hours of TV shows and movies per gigabyte of data, or about 600 Kilobits per second.

"Our testing found that, on cellular networks, this setting balances good video quality with lower data usage to help avoid exceeding data caps and incurring overage fees," Netflix's Director of Product Innovation, Eddy Wu, said in a statement.

The tool also offers a reminder that even if you choose higher quality in the app, your mobile service provider may place its own limits on bandwidth.
