The era of Internet Explorer is officially ending. On Tuesday, Microsoft confirmed that the company permanently disabled the out-of-support Internet Explorer 11 desktop app on certain versions of Windows 10 through a Microsoft Edge update. "With a growing number of websites no longer supporting Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge offers a faster, more secure, and more modern browsing experience that can still open legacy, Internet Explorer-dependent sites when needed," Microsoft said in a statement. Microsoft officially retired Internet Explorer in June last year, sunsetting it in favor of Microsoft Edge, with support officially withdrawn for IE 11. But today's update to Microsoft Edge will make sure you can no longer launch Internet Explorer 11 on most client versions of Windows 10. There are some exceptions, including Microsoft's Long-Term Servicing Channel for Windows 10 and versions like the Windows 10 China Government Edition, but for everyone else IE 11 is disappearing today. Microsoft launched Internet Explorer nearly three decades ago, in 1995. There were 11 versions of the browser between its launch and 2013, according to Encyclopaedia Britannica.
