Microsoft is finally putting the nail in the coffin of its Internet Explorer browser. As of June 15, 2022, the Internet Explorer 11 desktop app will be retired and go out of support for many versions of Windows 10, according to a Wednesday Windows 10 blog post. "We are announcing that the future of Internet Explorer on Windows 10 is in Microsoft Edge," says Sean Lyndersay, a Microsoft Edge program manager. "The Internet Explorer 11 desktop application will be retired and go out of support on June 15, 2022, for certain versions of Windows 10." Originally launched in 1995, the much-maligned Internet Explorer has long been irrelevant in today's consumer market. It currently holds a measly 3.8% share of the desktop browser space. Google's Chrome dominates with a nearly 70% share. The news doesn't come as a surprise: Last year, Microsoft said its Microsoft 365 apps suite would end support for Internet Explorer 11 on Aug. 17, 2021. Microsoft Edge, which already has an "Internet Explorer mode" built right in. Microsoft said in 2019 that it planned to add an IE Mode within Edge, and the virtualized browser lives on as a configurable mode within Microsoft Edge. That's important, because the modern Edge browser is simply more secure than Internet Explorer ever was.
