Huawei wants Verizon to pay for over 230 patents

Huawei wants the US carrier Verizon to pay license fees for more than $1 billion. The fees are for the use of over 230 networking-gear patents that cover network equipment for more than 20 of the company's vendors including major U.S. tech firms.

The request, which came in February before President Trump signed an executive order to bar U.S. firms from working with the Chinese telecommunications giant, is the latest escalation of tensions between the two nations.

Representatives for Huawei and Verizon met last week in New York to discuss some of the patents in question. A Verizon spokesperson told the New York Times that the company had no comment on the matter, but added that "these issues are larger than just Verizon." He also added, "Given the broader geopolitical context, any issue involving Huawei has implications for our entire industry and also raise national and international concerns."

Credit rating organization S&P Global said Wednesday that the impact on the tech industry of the Huawei ban in the US "could be wide ranging," including stymieing the growth of American tech companies.
