Google confirms plans to launch its own wireless service2015-03-03 09:42 by DanielaTags: Google, Wireless
After months of speculations, Google has finally confirmed that it plans to launch a wireless phone service for customers in the U.S. The announcement was made by Sundar Pichai, a senior vice president of Google, at the Mobile World Congress wireless show in Barcelona. "We don't intend to be a network operator at scale," Pichai said in a keynote address at the Mobile World Congress trade show. "We are working with carrier partners. You'll see our answer in coming months. Our goal is to drive a set of innovations we think should arrive, but do it a smaller scale, like Nexus devices, so people will see what we're doing." Google will utilize the "Wi-Fi first" approach, meaning that its service will offer mobile voice and data services primarily through Wi-Fi signals from Wi-Fi hotspots. It would fall back on cell towers in areas where Wi-Fi coverage is poor. Mr. Pichai did not say which carriers Google planned to team with. More details about the cellphone service are expected to become public soon. Read more -here-
